This mission report outlines the proceedings of the Regional Seminar on Food Irradiation held in Rabat, Morocco, from February 26 to March 1, 1996, co-sponsored by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), World Health Organization (WHO), and other organizations. The seminar aimed to address food losses, food-borne diseases, and facilitate food trade through the application of food irradiation technology. Over 50 participants from Africa and the Middle East engaged in discussions on food safety, public health, trade barriers, and regulatory harmonization. Key findings highlighted the potential of irradiation in reducing post-harvest losses and enhancing food safety, while also emphasizing the need for national policies and regulations to support the technology's adoption. The report concludes with recommendations for establishing national steering committees to promote food irradiation, improve public awareness, and harmonize regulations in line with international standards.
