This paper is prepared by the secretariat of the Economic Commission for Africa in pursuance of recommendations of the Seminar on Population problems in Africa held in Cairo in 1962, and of the Third conference of African Statisticians held in Addis Ababa in 1963. The object is to study the problems, methods and techniques of covering nomadic populations in demographic surveys in Africa. The importance of population censuses and surveys as the source of basic statistics for administrative purposes and for the formulation of economic and social policy, the need to include nomads can be easily understood, particularly in countries where they represent a large production of the population.
