Report of an advisory mission on needs assessment for the computerization of the economic community of West African States (ECOWAS) Logos, Nigeria, 24-28 October 1994

Abstract

This report presents the findings of an advisory mission conducted by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) to assess the computerization needs of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) secretariat in Lagos, Nigeria, from October 24 to 28, 1994. Led by Makane Faye and Peer Just, the mission aimed to evaluate the current information processing capabilities and identify the necessary hardware and software requirements to enhance productivity within the organization. The report outlines the objectives of ECOWAS, the challenges faced due to inadequate information technology, and the potential benefits of implementing a computerized documentation handling system. Key recommendations include the urgent preparation of a project proposal for funding, the establishment of a detailed technical specification for equipment and software, and the importance of training staff to effectively utilize the new systems.
