This report details the author's participation in the 7th IOSTE Symposium on "Science and Technology Education in a Demanding Society," held in Veldhoven, the Netherlands, from August 23-31, 1994. Invited as a representative of the African Region, the author presented a paper on the Second Industrial Development Decade for Africa (IDDA), emphasizing the critical role of science and technology education in Africa's industrialization. The paper highlighted the persistent economic crises in Africa, attributing them to an educational system misaligned with developmental needs, a weak industrial base, and environmental degradation. The author argued for educational reforms to equip Africans with the necessary technological skills for sustainable development. The symposium provided a platform to disseminate information on the Second IDDA, garnering significant interest from participants. Additionally, the author visited the United Nations University Institute for New Technologies, promoting UNECA's initiatives. The report concludes with recommendations for integrating practical technological education into African curricula to foster a culture of innovation and self-reliance.
