It is widely believed by development policy analysts that openness to trade has brought economic benefits to a broad range of countries over the years, including many in the developing world. The Doha Round sought to reinforce this belief as well as improving the role of trade as an engine of development in a more open, more transparent, more equitable rule-based global trading system that would be sensitive to the challenges of its poorer members.
