United Nations action for the advancement of women and equality between women and men began 50 years ago, with the founding of the organization in 1945. By promoting the adoption of the international treaties, identifying major areas of women’s concern and mobilizing international public opinion, and through research, training and direct assistance to disadvantaged groups, the United Nations has helped set a common standard for measuring how societies advance equality between men and women.
