The legacy of the social summit: Hot air or hope for change. Heads of state attending the World summit for Social Development in Copenhagen made stirring speeches and signed a declaration committing the~ to the goal of eradicating poverty in the world, through decisive national actions and international cooperation, as an ethical, social, political and economic imperative of humankind . The April issue of Publication examines the language of gender equality in the draft Beijing Platform for Action, population growth and land scarcity, NGO views on the promises of last September's International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), high-risk maternity in Brazil, and a campaign for better working conditions being waged by workers, especially women workers, in the Maquiladora Factory region along the border between Mexico and the united States.
