Abstract
Secretary Council calls upon Angolan parties to meet conditions for timely deployment of UNAVEKM III infantry units. Presidential statement welcomes recent meeting between president and UNITA leader. The necessary conditions for UNAVEM III’s development were laid out in February by resolution 976 (1995). They include effective cassation of hostilities, the provision of all relevant military data and the designation of quartering areas for UNITA troops. Underlining the urgency of a mine-clearance programme, the Council called upon the parties to begin mine-sweeping operations from major roads they controlled ' arid to keep their promises to provide the funds and equipment needed to make the mine-clearance programme operational.
