Secretary-General, accepting Friedman Award at Columbia University, says International Law can create new reality in global relations. As Secretary-General of the United Nations, I am persuaded that through a firm commitment to the principles and the true spirit of International Law, we can build a system of international relations that protects the rights and Human Dignity of the individual, that promotes mutual respect and support among nations, and that substantially enhances the prospects for International Economic Development. To achieve this the foundations for international action must continue to be expanded. The effectiveness of international efforts must continue to be strengthened. These are the tasks of our era. It is a challenge worthy of our best efforts. It is an enterprise in the truest spirit of the Charter.
