Security Council extends mandate of UN Observer Mission in Georgia. By its unanimous adoption of Resolution 896 (1994), the Council urged the parties to demonstrate stronger willingness to achieve progress towards a comprehensive political settlement. It also emphasized the importance of the implementation of the provisions of both the memorandum of understanding of 1 December 1993 and the communique of 13 January, which were signed by the Georgian and Abkhaz sides following the first and second round of negotiations between the two parties. In its consideration of any possible peace-keeping operation, the Council underlined the importance of substantive progress towards a political settlement in the next round of negotiations.
