The 7th Session of the Committee on Women and Development (CWD) will take place from 17-20 May 2011 at the headquarters of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The main objective of the meeting is to serve as a platform for Member States to exchange ideas and experiences whilst reviewing progress made with regards to the Banjul Declaration and the Beijing Platform for Action (BPFA). The session will also discuss strategies with regards to gender equality and track the progress of African countries in the area of women’s human rights, according to ECA’s Information and Communication Service. In light of the recent political events in North Africa, and the developments in countries such as Cote d’Ivoire in West Africa, the CWD will focus its attention on the role women have played in peace building and reconciliation initiatives in the two regions.
