The economics of war in the Sudan

Abstract

The Sudan has faced regional conflict since 1955 between the South and the North. This conflict has been justified in the literature by the differences between the two regions in aspects of ethnic origin, religion beliefs, culture and languages. Without playing down the role of these differences in the conflict, this article argues the importance of uneven development in originally inciting the conflict and continuously determining the position of different fractions involved in it. The argument is based on the understanding that the conflict is about sharing of power and distribution of wealth and resources in the Sudan.
