The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) today in Abuja called on African countries to build on the outcomes of the Abuja Food Security Summit in creating a common market of strategic food and agricultural commodities. In a presentation at the launch of a report by ECA’s sub regional office in Southern Africa, the Commission’s Director of Food Security and Sustainable Development, Josue Dione, said African countries should agree on potential regional belts for the production and processing of strategic food and agricultural commodities based on agro-ecological comparative advantage and the dynamics of the Regional Economic Commodities. The report, titled “Agricultural input business development in Africa: Opportunities, issues and challenges”, was launched at an event on the sides of the high level summit on agri-business and agro-industries, which entered a ministerial segment today.
