The digital gap between the developed world and the developing countries is growing at an alarming rate in regions like Africa which does not possess the necessary material and technical resources to enter the information age and to contribute to the development of the world economy. Consequently, open source software has become widespread in technical, government, media and civil circles of African societies due to their low cost of operation and particularly their principles of freedom and sharing. Presently, open software is an unrivaled opportunity for the maintenance of sustainable development in Africa.
