African experts meet to review 2009 report on assessing progress towards attaining the MDGs

The African Union Commission (AUC), the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) have jointly organized today, Wednesday 8 April 2009, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, a meeting grouping Experts from AU Members States, to review the 2009 Report on Assessing Progress towards Attaining the MDGs, jointly produced and launched by the three organizations. Addressing participants during today’s opening ceremony, Advocate Bience Gawanas, Commissioner for Social Affairs of the African Union said Africa has shown significant improvement in reporting and in the coverage of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). “This improvement is commendable and we would like to urge relevant ministries responsible for MDGs to ensure that adequate reporting is maintained on all indicators for monitoring purposes”, she noted.
