The Eighth Africa Regional Conference on Women (Beijing +15), held in Banjul, The Gambia, from 19–20 November 2009, reviewed progress and challenges in implementing the Beijing Platform for Action (BPfA) across Africa. Ministers, government representatives, intergovernmental organizations, UN agencies, and civil society discussed achievements in gender equality, such as education and political participation, while addressing persistent issues like violence against women, maternal mortality, and climate change impacts. The conference culminated in the adoption of the Banjul Declaration, outlining priorities for accelerating BPfA implementation, including economic empowerment, peace and security, and financing for gender equality. The event emphasized strengthened partnerships and renewed commitments to achieve tangible progress by 2015.
