Abstract
Published under the Portuguese title, Novo Contrato Social. Propostas para esta geração e para as futuras (2013) this book challenges the reader to rethink the possibility of a new social contract based on notions of sustainable development for upcoming generations. The reflections in this book by Carlos Lopes, Ignacy Sachs and Rajendra Pachauri among others, is the result of a debate entitled, A New Social Contract for the 21st Century” organized by the Instituto Ethos and UNITAR on June 23 2012. The nine chapters focus on the global agenda for 2015-2020 and tackle current environmental, social and economical challenges. The debate was held 250 years after the publication of Rousseau’s Social Contract and one day after RIO+20.
