Statement by H.E Ato Seyoum Mesfin Minister Of Foreign Affairs Of The Federal Democratic Republic Of Ethiopia To The African Regional Hearing For The Millennium Assembly. H. E. Ato Seyoum, on his remarks highlighted that, There is little doubt that the United Nations has made substantial difference in the past half century in areas that have been identified in its Charter as falling within its purview. Whether in the area of international peace and security and in those related to economic, social and cultural co-operation, and to humanitarian and human right matters, the UN has played a critical role in the past more than fifty years in contributing co making the world safer and the people of the world, in particular those in Africa and in other developing countries, a little better economically and socially than would have been the case without the United Nations. Africa's main challenges could be put in simple terms. They are challenges of peace and security on one hand and of poverty and the difficulties of achieving sustainable development on the other challenges which are very much interrelated and which have been seen in our Continent to reinforce each other putting our peoples in a vicious circle. We ·see at present at the level of states, despite setbacks here and there, including in Africa, a continuing process of growth in democratization.en
