Statement of the Secretary-General on the occasion of the Aids summit, Paris, 1 December 1994.the representative on his statement points out that far from being limited to one region of the world, Aids threatens the population of every continent. In Europe, America, Africa and Asia, no country has been spared. The appalling figures reveal the extent of the crisis facing the international community . According to the World Health Organization, 17 million people have been infected with the AIDS virus since the epidemic began. Two million of them are already dead . Every day, 6, 000 more people become infected. This is a matter of concern to the entire human community. At the same time, AIDS is throwing the planet's social inequalities into relief by exacerbating them, At the present time, the disease is hitting hardest at the developing and least developed countries. with no access to even the most basic health care and with little or no information, the poorest people in the poorest countries are the disease’s natural targets.
