Statement Mr Abdoulie Janneh, UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of ECA at the UNCTAD XII Meeting of African Trade Ministers. Mr. Janneh, on his remarks highlighted that, the increased attention to intra-Africa trade is undoubtedly due to the renewed recognition of its importance for lending momentum to growth in the continent. Africa has been growing at an average of over 5% per annum since the turn of the Millennium which is respectable but below the rate needed for rapid transformation and for the early achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. UNCTAD can help by enabling Africa to know more about and learn from the experience of other developing regions and by continuing to put its technical programmes like the Automated System for Customs Data (ASYCUDA) at the disposal of African countries and Regional Economic Communities.
