Abstract

The 1986 African Statistical yearbook, the tenth issue, is the fourth computer-based edition prepared by the ECA statistics division. As in the previous editions, the yearbook is published in four parts, with the following sub-regional arrangements: Part 1 North Africa; Part 2 West Africa; Part 3 Eastern and Southern Africa; Part 4 Central Africa and others in Africa. This volume which constitutes the fourth part of this edition covers the sixteen countries in West Africa. The 1986 edition presents data arranged on a country basis for 52 African countries for the years 1977 to 1986. The country classification is intended to complement the presentation of data on a subject basis in UN headquarters documents and has been approved by the conference of African statisticians, now merged into the joint conference of African planners, statisticians and demographer. To ensure comparability, the statistics included in this Yearbook have been presented as far as possible t accordance with international recommendations and definitions. Where important deviations are known to exist they are indicated in footnotes at the end of each country. Owing to the rounding of figures, the totals shown in tables do not always correspond exactly to the sum of their component items.
