Abstract

Address to the Africa Investment Forum by Dr. Josué Dioné, Director, Sustainable Development Division (SDD) United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) at the Africa Investment Forum. Dr. Dioné, on his remarks highlighted that the aim of the Forum, that he understand, is to promote partnerships among Governments and Business with a view to boosting investment and sharing and maximizing the resulting benefits across more integrated countries and regions of the continent. Sustainable Development is above all about development that is sustainable. Because of severe under-capitalization, the rural landscape in Africa is still marked by smallholder subsistence farms, low technology and weak knowledge-based agricultural production systems, owing to the lack of development and widespread use of appropriate technologies and to extreme paucity in basic support infrastructure. Developing agriculture for structural economic transformation, broad-based economic growth, food security and poverty reduction requires broadening the analytical and programmatic perspective beyond the narrow confines of farming.
