Résumé
According to UNESCO sources, education in Africa expanded from 12. 7 million students in 1960 to 91 million students in 1987. Al the primary level this colossal growth was from 12 million to 68.3 million students, while enrolments in tertiary education rose from 21 thousand to 2 million within the same period. Gross enrolment ratios increased from 36 in 1960 to over 75 in 1987 at the primary level from 3 to more than 25 at the secondary level, and in higher education from 0.2 to around 2.0. This is indeed a mammoth achievement in such a relatively short period of time.
