The Abuja Treaty was signed on 3 June, 1991 with the objective of establishing an African Economic Community (AEC) as an integral part of the Organization for African Unity (OAU). The objectives of the Protocol on Industry annexed to the Treaty is to promote self-sustained industrialization within the African Economic Community designed, among others, to enhance regional and continental integration and to expand trade in industrial products and effect structural transformation of industry for the purpose of fostering the overall social and economic development of the member States.
