This report, prepared for the Committee of Intergovernmental Experts of the Lusaka-based MULPOC, examines the effects of migrant mining labor on rural development and agrarian productivity in Southern Africa. It highlights the significant impact of male labor migration on women, who often become de facto heads of households, managing farms with reduced resources and labor. The report identifies a decline in agricultural productivity in areas heavily affected by migration, with women increasingly engaging in non-farm activities due to the absence of male labor. It discusses the economic implications of remittances, which are often directed towards consumption rather than agricultural investment, leading to a cycle of dependency and reduced self-sufficiency in food production.
