The role of hydrology and hydrometeorology in the eocnomic development of Africa = Le rôle de l'hydrologie et de l'hydorlogie et de l'hydrométrologie dans le développement économique de l'Afrique

Abstract

This paper reviews the major methods and problems associated with the study heat and vapor fluxes in Nigeria. One major feature is the lack of the correct and appropriate data on the radiation fluxes in such an environment. This problem is being tackled but the scale and the scope need to be examined. Studies in radiation and evaporation need to be undertaken in different parts of the country especially as Nigeria straddles across the major climatic zones in West Africa. For this purpose, it is suggested that an agrometeorological set-up similar to the one operating is the Middle East should be built in West Africa to cope with the problems of data co-ordination and analysis, instrumentation and research and research, training of agro meteorologists. For the reasons stated Nigeria offers the best location for such a station.
