Abstract

The ECA/UNCTC Joint Unit on Transnational Corporations, located in the International Trade and Finance Division of EGA, was established in 1976 by an agreement signed between the Executive Director of the United Nations Centre on Transnational Corporations (UNCTC) and the Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) pursuant to Resolution 1961 (LIX) of the Untied Nations Economic and Social Council adopted on 29 July 1975. The Joint Unit is the focal point for the United Nations programme of activities relating to transnational corporations in the African region. It also serves as liaison between UNCTC and ECA and operates as an integral part of both institutions under a mandate derived from the Commission on Transnational Corporations. The objectives of the work programme of the Joint Unit are to study, monitor and evaluate the activities of transnational corporations operating in Africa with a view to assisting the member States of ECA.
