On the occasion of the Africa statistics day, K.Y. Amoako Executive Secretary Economic Commission for Africa address a keynote under the title “Poverty: strengthening statistical capacity for measuring and monitoring poverty in Africa.” In his speech he highlighted: The ECA is proud to have been associated with statistical development in Uganda through the provision of advisory services in statistical organization and management. The ECA is also pleased that the Addis Ababa Plan of Action for Statistical Development in Africa in the 1990s and the Strategy for its implementation played a seminal role during the early days of you work. We also wish to pay tribute to both bilateral and multilateral partners for their timely support. In Africa the problem of poverty is more serious and pervasive. However, there are encouraging developments for example, Uganda with its Poverty Eradication Action Plan is already in the forefront of addressing the challenge of poverty. In this connection I wish to give credit to the United Nations Development Program for consistently addressing issues of poverty over the years and providing much impetus to poverty studies and programs in the countries and at international level.
