In most African countries there has been a demand for certain statistical information which can come only, or most conveniently, from sample surveys or households. It is convenient to classify the more important statistical items of this type under four heads: Demography; Agriculture: structural data (including crop acreages), current data (including crop yields and production) Household consumption (including production, expenditure and income). The purpose of the present paper is, to introduce a discussion along the above lines. Any paper confined to generalities would, be of little interest. Thus, definite suggestions will be made regarding the merits of the different methods, on the basis of knowledge available to ECA. However, it is hoped that the main contributions will come from the countries.
