A delegation from the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) visited the Division of Transport, Communications, and Tourism at the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) on May 11, 1993, to discuss collaboration on the Second United Nations Transport and Communications Decade in Africa (UNTACDA II, 1991-2000). Key areas of interest for IDB intervention included addressing missing links in trans-African highways, promoting regional integration, removing non-physical barriers, and supporting projects for landlocked countries, such as dry ports. Specific projects proposed for IDB consideration included the construction of the East-West Motorway in Algeria, feasibility studies for road rehabilitation in Chad, Guinea, Mali, Niger, and Sierra Leone, and initiatives to enhance air transport, multimodal transport, and port operations across Africa. These projects, drawn from the UNTACDA II program, aim to improve infrastructure, boost regional trade, and foster economic integration among member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
