This document has been prepared on the basis of a study undertaken on social situation in Africa, which included a study tour to a number of countries in the region during the period December 1975- June 1976. The study, which was conducted at the instance of the Economic Commission for Africa by a special Consultant, Professor K.E. de Graft Johnson, seeks to present a review and an appraisal of social conditions and recent trends in Africa. In the document has been assembled a kaleidoscope of problems which face Africa. There is no lack of imagination when it comes to cataloguing the ills that beset our countries. But we are often unable to arrive at concrete and relevant solutions to these problems because we are not aware of them, have not studied them adequately or lack the means to study them, are not intimately acquainted with them and, therefore, are not in a position to arrive at alternative solutions to them.
