The importance of the Scheme to the country as a whole can hardly be exaggerated. Some 60 per cent of the total value of domestic exports come from irrigated products, mainly Catton, and the Gezira Scheme provides a large proportion of these. It represents one of the principal single investments of public funds and contributes significantly to Government revenue, By the beginning of the 1962-63 season, it will provide employment and food for over 70,000 tenants and their families, and casual labour for over 200,000 people each season
