Sugar is one of the important industries and its development is vital for the economic development of Africa. This study relates to the possibilities of development of the sugar industry in West Africa. The study envisages the formulation of a tentative plan of development of sugar industry in the West African sub-region with a view to making the sub-region self-sufficient in sugar. The demand for sugar in the year 1980 has been assessed for each country, taking into account the possible increase in consumption due to higher income and due to the growth of population. The possibilities of meeting the assessed requirements have been examined.
