Technical plans for social surveys

Abstract

It may be recalled that the African household Survey Capability Programme (AESCP) aims at assisting African countries to collect integrated social demographic and economic data on households and household members. In the proposals so far formulated by ECA, this objective is to be achieved by assisting these countries to establish statistical infrastructures and to formulate and implement integrated programmes of household surveys. Social surveys can be defined to cover all aspects of social life particularly those of concern at points in time. In general, there are three approaches to social surveys. An integrated approach or modules on special areas of concern or a combination of both. Social surveys in Africa and elsewhere have followed either an integrated approach for which data are collected across the subject fields or a special module· approach in which data are collected in relation to a specific module.
