Estimates of mortality levels, differentials and patterns in Ethiopia

Abstract

This brief overview of the state of demographic data in Ethiopia shows that the available demographic data is very limited, deficient and defective. By virtue of the available data the estimation of estimation of mortality conditions in the country follows the application of Sullivan’s modification of Brass's technique of mortality estimation from defective and minimal data to the afore-mentioned data. The measures of mortality level used in this paper are infant mortality rate, expectation of life at birth, crude death rate. Mortality differentials are measured by regional and urban variations. Attempt is also made to study the, pattern of mortality by age and sex.
