The Third WTO Ministerial Conference in Seattle marks a critical moment for Africa, as it will shape the multilateral trading system and influence Africa’s economic future. While many African countries have adopted democratic governance, market-oriented reforms, and trade liberalization, sustaining growth and reducing poverty remain major challenges. Africa requires a 7% annual growth rate to significantly reduce poverty, but current growth remains insufficient. The success of the Seattle negotiations hinges on addressing developing countries' concerns, ensuring the new round becomes a "Development Round" that benefits Africa through improved market access, technical assistance, and fairer trade rules. African countries must proactively engage in negotiations, focusing on agriculture, services, and special treatment for least-developed nations, while addressing implementation challenges from previous WTO agreements. A balanced, equitable global trading system is essential for Africa’s long-term development and poverty eradication.en
