This report summarizes the proceedings of the Regional Workshop on Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for African Decision-Makers held in Nairobi, Kenya, from August 26-30, 1991. Organized by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) in collaboration with FAO, UNEP, UNITAR, and other organizations, the workshop aimed to sensitize African countries to the importance of remote sensing and GIS for natural resource management and environmental monitoring. The workshop included technical presentations, case studies, and discussions on various applications of remote sensing and GIS in agriculture, forestry, fisheries, water resources, and mineral resources. It also covered training facilities, institutional developments, and the role of communication satellites in data dissemination. The report concludes with observations, recommendations, and a call for increased funding and coordination to enhance the use of these technologies in Africa.
