Multilateral agricultral liberalization : what's in it for Africa?

Abstract

The paper examines the impact of agricultural trade reforms from the Doha Round on African economies. Using a global dynamic general equilibrium model, the study explores various scenarios of tariff cuts and subsidy reductions. Results indicate that ambitious tariff cuts yield significant benefits for Africa, but sensitive product exemptions by developed countries can erode these gains. The study emphasizes the importance of comprehensive tariff reductions alongside subsidy cuts to ensure positive outcomes for African agriculture.
