The United Republic of Tanzania is emerging from the most contested election in its history. The new Government will inherit an economy that is growing rapidly but that continues to fall short of the ambitions of its citizens. The economy has demonstrated resilience in the face of a weakening global economy. With an average annual growth rate of 6.9 per cent during the period from 2010 to 2014, the United Republic of Tanzania is one of the fastest growing economies in Eastern Africa. In contrast to its economic performance, the country’s recent achievements in social development have been relatively modest. The United Republic of Tanzania ranked between 151st and 152nd in the human development index of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for every year from 2010 to 2014. This spatial variance in development, combined with a rapidly urbanizing population, presents a challenge for addressing inequality.
