Abstract
The African Gender Development Index (AGDI) was developed in 2004 as a tool to measure inequality between men and women, and to assist African member States in addressing gender gaps to implement global and regional commitments. The Index aims to address the inadequacy of policy, planning and monitoring mechanisms and to track progress made towards gender equality and women’s empowerment commitments in Africa, such as the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa, the Beijing Platform for Action, the review outcomes of the International Conference on Population and Development, the new 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals and the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, within the framework of Agenda 2063 of the African Union.
