African countries are faced with the option of turning their economic growth and development into one that takes into account environmental sustainability and is resilient to climate change. Over the past decade, they have made remarkable progress in their efforts towards achieving economic and social development, including realizing some of the Millennium Development Goals. Currently, Africa is the continent with the fastest growing economy in the world. The African journey towards structural transformation will be accompanied by a number of challenges, not least the imperative to achieve green industrialization and to leapfrog towards cleaner technologies. The continent must overcome both energy and water insecurities, and orient its development pathway on a trajectory that recognizes the imperative for green growth.
