Gender equality and empowerment of women featured on the agenda of the international community long before the promulgation of the Millennium Summit. Achievement of women’s socio-economic progress were spelt out in international and regional declarations such as the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW, 1975), the Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989), Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (1995), and the African Union 2004 Solemn Declaration on Gender Equality in Africa (SDGEA). This report assesses performance towards achieving MDG 3 by examining relevant indicators and other cross-cutting dimensions of gender. The report relies on existing literature and secondary data. The report is not exhaustive due to paucity of data relating to some of the indicators. Therefore, the outcome is merely indicative, inviting member States to take measures to avail missing data, and more specifically sex-disaggregated national data, to allow for realistic assessment. To enrich the experience of learning from one another, glimpse of country experiences shall be presented.
