The statement was delivered at the Eighteenth Meeting
of the Executive Committee in Khartoum from May 1 - 4, 1978. The paper focused on a brief review of the development trends in the ECA region in recent years in particular, since the world recession, which began late in 1974 and on identifying some of the major development
issues. It also discussed in some detail major development
issues namely, education and employment in the African context. It explored the role of Economic
Commission for Africa in the search for appropriate solutions to the various economic and social problems facing the continent in order to help the member states within Africa improve their economic performance.
