The objective of this paper is to bring together the available data .with respect to employment and poverty situation in Africa and to analyze their underlying trends and causes. Section II presents the evidence on employment and unemployment in its quantitative and qualitative dimensions. Section III draws on ILO studies to present a detailed picture relating to income distribution and poverty. Section IV reviews the evidence regarding migration and population growth as a basis for explaining the employment and poverty trends in rural and urban areas.
