This paper focuses on proposals for accelerating the establishment of an African monetary fund. The African Monetary Fund (AMF) should have the following objectives: To contribute to the economic development and social advancement of its member States by evolving an African monetary system which would command the confidence of its members through monetary and financial co-operation at the African regional level, and which would serve as a consultative machinery for encouraging more balanced economic growth in the member States and To promote stability of the African currencies through appropriate stabilization policies, including exchange rate systems, at the national, sub regional and regional levels.
