This paper focuses on the statistical function at ECA which has been moved under a new programme entitled "Harnessing Information for Development" in the Development Information Services Division (DISD). The Division brings together four former component units namely the Statistics Division (SD), the Pan African Development Information System (PADIS), the Cartography Unit and the Library. The statistical activities of DISD are not very different from the activities undertaken by the former Statistics Division with the exception of the activities carried out by the regional advisers who are now under the UNFPA country support team (CST). The activities focus on: a) coordination of statistical development in Africa;
b) production of statistical data of ECA member States;
c) advisory services to ECA member States;
d) implementation of field projects; and
e) the training of staff in national statistical offices (NSO).
