Terrain evaluation consists of the examination of an area of ground to
determine all factors that will influence the planning, design and execution of a project. The appropriate technique used to gather information depends upon the size of the project and the required level of accuracy. This paper describes the three main techniques that are used to gather information by indirect methods, with examples of their application to highway engineering.
