This paper addresses emerging issues of trade and labor standards under WTO negotiations that are pertinent to African countries. The paper asserts that labor standards provide guidelines for improving working conditions and affirms that making labor standards binding wherever feasible may be acceptable as long as the competitiveness of countries is not eroded. African countries should strive to create an enabling environment for improving conditions of work. They should also combine their efforts in the negotiation process and promote wider participation by all stakeholders.
