Report of the technical preparatory committee of the whole on its third meeting

Abstract

With regard to subregional economic co-operation, the Treaty establishing a Preferential Trade Area for Eastern and Southern Africa, which had been opened for signature at the summit meeting in Lusaka in December 1981, had now been signed by 11 States. The Central African States had also set in motion the process for establishing a wider basis for economic co-operation in that subregion and it was to be hoped that such co-operation arrangements would be developed in the other subregions so as to establish a veritable foundation for over-all economic integration, which was a sine_gua_non for the economic and political survival of African countries.
