The role of ICT in OSSREA's activities : a briefing note prepared for the 2nd meeting of the Committee on Development Inforamtion (CODI) on the theme of "development information and decision making"

Abstract

The Organization for Social Science Research in Eastern and Southern Africa (OSSREA) is a membership-based research network whose Secretariat is located in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. It was founded in 1980 in the town of Nazareth, Ethiopia, by a group of social scientists from Eastern Africa. Some of the cardinal objectives laid down for it by its founding fathers are: 1. To encourage and promote interest in the study of and research in the social sciences in Eastern and Southern Africa; 2. To promote collaborative research and facilities for scholarly exchange of ideas and publications between individuals and institutions engaged in the study of and research in the social sciences; 3. To promote the training of African scholars in the study of and research in the social sciences and to encourage the establishment of institutions dedicated to this goal; 4. To promote dialogue and interaction between social scientists and policy-makers in Eastern and Southern Africa with a view to enhancing the impact of social science research on policy-making and development planning.
